The university was established in 1956 through an imaginative and innovative collaboration between the then State of PEPSU (Patiala and East Punjab States Union), the Central Government and the Patiala Technical Education Trust (PTET) founded by one of the great captains of Indian Industry, the late Lala Karam Chand Thapar. The university is one of the pioneers in technical education in the state of Punjab. It has been named as one of the premier deemed universities in the state. The university offers various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in technical education approved by AICTE. The university offers research facilities and is ranked amongst top Indian technical Universities by independent research organizations.

The hostel mess caters to all the food and nutritional requirements of students. The menu for all meal sessions is changed regularly to provide variety and wholesome nourishment. | Library | The Library housed in a centrally air-conditioned aesthetically designed building which remains open for 24 hours on all the 365 days. The print collection of over 1,06,000 volumes consists of books, theses and dissertations, back volumes of journals, standards, and reports. Electronic collection of over 4500 units consists of Audio-Visual Materials such as CD/ VCD/ DVD. There is an impressive research and reference collection comprising of reference books, bibliographic databases, research reports, and standards. Adequate provision of professional and supplementary reading material in addition to standard text books has been made in the library collection. The Library also has growing collections of books and multimedia items for leisure, personality development, homemaking and other soft skills. The collection is regularly updated with latest editions and new publications. The Library has four reading halls with a combine seating capacity of 350 seats. |
