Punjab Education Budget 2023-24 receives a 12% boost with an allocation of over 17k crore for schools and higher education.

On March 10, 2023, Punjab's Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema presented the state's budget for 2023-24. The budget allocated Rs 17,072 crore for school and higher education, which is a 12% increase from the previous year's budget. The government has identified 117 schools that will be upgraded to Schools of Eminence, and Rs 200 crore has been kept for the same. Additionally, Rs 30 crore has been allocated for the Punjab Young Entrepreneur Programme, which will provide seed money of Rs 2000/student to Class 11 students with original business ideas.

 

The government has also proposed the installation of rooftop solar panels in government schools with an allocation of Rs 100 crore. This initiative aims to promote sustainable energy practices in educational institutions. Moreover, the budget includes two new schemes – Professional Coaching for Employment and Soft Skill and Communication Training. The coaching will be provided on professional lines and will establish dedicated employability coaching centers in government colleges.

 

While presenting the budget, Harpal Cheema stated that education, health, and agriculture are among the priority sectors for the government. The total budget size has increased by 26% to Rs 1,96,462 crore for 2023-24 compared to the previous year.

The Punjab government's emphasis on education is a significant step towards improving the state's education system. The allocation of funds towards upgrading schools to Schools of Eminence will improve the quality of education offered to students.
