According to the 'Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023' or GMER-23, which was announced by the apex medical education regulator on June 2, a candidate not allowed to appear in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test- Undergraduate, or NEET -UG, unless he has attained the age of 17 years on or before 31st January of the year of admission to UG medical courses. Earlier, at the time of completing at least 17 years as on 31st December of the year of admission served as a boundary.
Additionally, all medical institutions will use a common counseling process based on the NEET-UG merit list for admission to undergraduate medical programs as per the new norms. The designated authority has to submit the final list of students to the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) within a week of its completion. UGMEB will issue instructions for conducting the counselling. Within a week of the last day of enrollment in the course, each medical institution must also provide the UGMEB with the final list of admitted students.
As per another clause of the rule, "The UGMEB is responsible for posting the model curriculum and outcome objectives on the NMC website. Along with the NMC curriculum, additional elective credit courses of short duration shall be available. A UG medical student must complete a Rotating Medical Internship as per the Mandatory Rotating Medical Internship Regulations (CRMI), 2021 to be recognized as a graduate.
