Harrow School, a prestigious international institution, is set to open its first school in India, with Harrow Bengaluru scheduled to launch by June-July of this year. The Bengaluru campus will be the first of four schools planned to be opened in India over the next five years, according to Andrew Leale, founding head master of the school. Harrow School is ranked in the top one percent of global schools and has a notable alumni that includes Benedict Cumberbatch and late Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Unlike its branches in the UK, Harrow Bengaluru will be co-educational. The school is spread over 60 acres of land and will start with onboarding 150 students in the first year, with plans to increase to a maximum of 1,000 students in the future. The school will follow the Cambridge Lower Secondary curriculum for the Middle School grades 6 to 8, with subjects including English, Math, Science, Global Perspectives, Computing, Music, Art, Design, and Performing Arts. The Senior School grades 9 to 12 will follow IGCSE courses in English, Math, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Global Perspectives, with students choosing four additional subjects from a range of options such as Art, Business, Computer Science, Design and Technology, Drama, Economics, Geography, History, Music, Psychology, and four modern foreign languages. Students in grades 11 and 12 will also have the option to follow A-level or IB Diploma courses.
Fees for grades 6 to 10 will be Rs 8.62 lakh for term I and II, and Rs 17.25 lakh for the whole year. The school is offering a founding discount of 15 percent on tuition fees to students with Indian passports, bringing the discounted fees down to Rs 14.6 lakh. For grades 11 and 12, fees will be Rs 18 lakh, with discounted fees of Rs 15.30 lakh. Boarding services are available for an annual fee of Rs 3.5 lakh for weekly services and Rs 4.5 lakh for full boarding. Bus transportation will cost Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 per term, while lunch fees for day students will be Rs 45,000 per year.
Leale stated that the staff at Harrow Bengaluru will consist of 60 percent international teachers and 40 percent Indian teachers. The school anticipates that most students will be boarders from across India, given the popularity of international education and the challenges of travelling within the city.
