P K S Madhavan fondly referred to as Pujya Shri Madhavanji is a simple and modest man with deep cultural roots. A man who follows what he preaches – meditates everyday and maintains an austere life. He has dedicated his life to the upliftment of the poor and homeless. Pujya Shri Madhavanji took a quick step many a time to reach people struck by natural and other calamities. He has run several medical camps in interior tribal areas. He has established many educational institutions and has presented over 140 papers and reports, written many books and has been honoured with many awards. An IAS officer, who left his career to serve the poor, is a Post Graduate in Anthropology. He founded Action for Welfare and Awakening Rural Environment (AWARE) on November 5th 1975 which is today the largest Non Government Organisation (NGO) in India. AWARE’s activities are spread over 8760 villages throughout Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttaranchal, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Uttar Pradesh. AWARE’s agenda is based on Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of self sustaining rural development. AWARE has made 3,000 villages self reliant and helped 2.5 million families cross the poverty line[/box]
